A few words about the farm and the keeper behind it.
Welcome to Southwind Farm & Apiaries. Nestled along Rhode Island's historic Beaver River Road, Southwind Farm & Apiaries carries forward more than 160 years of homesteading tradition. Once known as Walnut Hill Farm and Cliffmoore House, our land and farmhouse were built in 1860 by the Moore family, whose descendants we still keep in touch with today. In 2021, the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service added our farm—along with two neighbors—to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Beaver River Road Historic District. (Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission)
From the moment you arrive, history greets you in the maple and tulip tree allée planted around 1900, the hand-laid stone walls, and the charming barns that have stood watch for generations. But this is no museum piece—it's a living, working landscape.
We tend 5-10 thriving bee colonies, nurture fruit trees, blueberries, strawberries, and sprawling kitchen and herb gardens. Laying hens of all stripes roam the yard, a mini-vineyard catches the afternoon sun, and trails wind through the property for hiking, skiing, sledding, and even a bit of disc golf. Our farm is also recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
While Southwind Farm is not a commercial operation, we love to share the bounty when we have extra—whether that's honey, eggs, produce, or something else the season brings. Sometimes we sell it, sometimes we trade, and always we post updates on our Instagram page.
Here, we invite you to follow along with the seasons—see what's growing, buzzing, blooming, and occasionally up for barter. This is a place where history, nature, and good food come together, and where neighbors are always welcome to stop by—online or in person.
